Beyond Containment: Current Issues in Fume Hood Testing Via Zoom
Tuesday, June 17, 2025 1:00PM - 2:00PM
Speaker: Rob Chopowick, Independent Consultant
About
Laboratory fume hoods serve as the primary defense against hazardous chemical exposures, with their effectiveness dependent on rigorous testing protocols and evolving industry standards. This presentation examines the current state of fume hood testing through three critical perspectives:
- Current and Future Tracer Gas Methodologies: An analysis of contemporary ASHRAE 110 testing practices, including challenges with ejector system reliability and the industry's transition away from SF₆ due to environmental concerns.
- Comparative Standards Framework: An examination of how North American approaches (ASHRAE 110, Z9.5) differ from European methodologies (EN 14175), particularly contrasting static breathing-zone evaluations against dynamic containment testing and whole-system ventilation assessment.
- Emerging Technologies and Testing Evolution: An exploration of innovative testing approaches and advancements in fume hood design, including the potential impact of artificial intelligence on both design optimization and performance verification.
The webinar will provide laboratory safety professionals with practical insights for evaluating fume hood performance while preparing for upcoming changes in testing standards and technologies.
